The UN 2030 document on education was officially rescinded on June 23, 2017, in a meeting of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, presided by the mullahs’ president, Hassan Rouhani.
The majority of SCCR members voted for a document adopted under the previous president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to be the criterion in all educational matters. And the UNESCO’s 2030 Framework for Action document would no longer be a point of reference.
UNESCO’s document 2030 calls for gender equality in educational opportunities and the Iranian regime had signed it with reservations.
Earlier that day, 151 members of the mullahs’ parliament (Majlis) had signed a letter to Hassan Rouhani demanding that the 2030 document be officially withdrawn. (The state-run Fars news agency, June 13, 2030)
The regime thus once again demonstrated its antagonism to equal opportunities for women, a policy that is deeply intertwined with the regime’s survival in power.
